Moose is a modern & friendly neighborhood cafe, situated on a sunny corner of a historic neighborhood in the North Loop. We bake delicious pastries and create inventive and healthful dishes. The menu reflects our own standards for eating and drinking well. We use fresh, local and organic ingredients to prepare original everyday food, made from scratch.
We are so proud to offer the very best coffee in the Twin Cities. Tiny Footprint is the world’s first carbon negative coffee. That means they are actually restoring our world more than they are depleting it. We are lucky to have this roaster, local. They ethically source their coffee beans and they spread good karma worldwide through reforestation. They are a great partner and company and they even came in to interview us recently.
The woman behind the simple, flavorful and healthful meals and pastries at Moose has been cooking all of her life. She grew up in a big family where her mother encouraged her to cook and bake. Her passion for good and clean food started in college at the Riverside cafe, a collectively run vegetarian cafe (which was very pioneering in the 60s). Susan dropped out of school to pursue her passion, knowing then that she would someday own her own business. After 8 years at the woman-owned Lucias, Susan moved on to open the Birchwood Cafe. Her love of good local food grew strong and she eventually took all that knowledge into rejuvenating our kitchen. Day in and day out, Susan and her team bake and cook every wholesome dish at Moose & Sadie's from scratch.
Line Caught Tuna
It is so important to us to use food and ingredients that are real, ethical and well that obviously taste amazing. We keep a tuna melt on our menu at all times because it is just one of those classic sandwiches that we crave. With really good ingredients, it is even better. If you too are a fan of the tuna, then you will be interested to know that our tuna is not caught by nets. Each fish is caught using a pole and line which makes sure that every sandwich we prepare is made with the highest grade tuna. Our tuna has quite the story. The original Ortiz Cannery was built over a hundred years ago in the Basque region of Spain. The more we know about the food we eat, the better choices we can make. Our wonderful partners over at Great Ciao visited Ondarroa, a small fishing town where our tuna is caught, cooked, cleaned and hand-packed into jars. In 1991, after recently returning from an inspiring backpacking trip through Europe, Peter Kirihara decided he wanted a change of lifestyle and opened Moose & Sadie’s. From the moment he opened the doors in the Warehouse district of Minneapolis, Moose became the home of coffee culture. It was home (at least until 2 am) to artists, writers, antique dealers and other creative young people who became the same people who would eventually live in and work in the now thriving neighborhood. Moose grew to be the embodiment of the Warehouse district culture and ultimately has become a downtown institution. Known for its quality coffee and food, simple style and authenticity, Peter’s vision was and still is to provide a welcoming atmosphere with smart and interesting staff that add to the culture with their unique personalities. Over its 23 year history, Moose has become a place for people, and recently even the Vice President of the USA to connect to a neighborhood with a cool past. With a true appreciation for this historic neighborhood, Peter has also opened two other businesses within blocks, Jetset and Bev’s Wine Bar.
At Moose we celebrate the fresh, the local and the sustainable. Most of the produce, dairy and dry goods that we serve are organic and sourced by Co-op Partners Warehouse. On a given day, they have over 200 organic produce items stocked in their local warehouse to service co-ops, natural food stores and restaurants in the Upper Midwest. They have close relationships with local producers in Minnesota and Wisconsin and enable us to support family businesses and serve wholesome and sustainable foods at Moose. We also take advantage of their drop-ship program as an energy-efficient means of distribution. We like to cook things that are fresh and seasonal so Co-op Partners Warehouse is a perfect partner for us. Since the items that they carry vary every single week, our menu is energized by what is fresh. We value being able to serve food that is affordable but also what is really good to eat, right now. Seasonal ingredients are what inspires the creativity behind our menu. “When we start getting our first fresh speckled romaine or french breakfast radishes in the spring, I am truly inspired to try new dishes.” - Susan Muskat.
